Your Home away from Home

on Costa Rica's Southern Caribbean Coast

CASAS del CARIBE welcomes you to Costa Rica's Southern Caribbean Coast, also know as Caribe Sur. It's where the jungle meets the sea, where the sound of reggae is at every corner, where the smell of Caribbean flavors takes you to the islands, where the pace is a bit slower, and where it's just a little bit different than anywhere else you've been to!

The eclectic mix of cultures, foods, colors, backgrounds, incredibly lush vegetation, virgin beaches, live coral reefs all in one place is what makes the towns of Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and the surrounding communities of Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzaniilo a truly unique destination.

Whether it's your first time or you are returning, there are many ways to stay here. There are a number of fantastic and varying hotels, cabinas and bed & breakfasts in the region, but we've dedicated this site and our business to a new and popular way of traveling: short and long term vacation rentals.

All of the properties on this site have been verified and most have up to date reservation calendars. You should find it easy to find the perfect property for your needs. In case you need any help or would like to speak with someone directly, we have knowledgeable staff that is here to help you -- not just with finding a great rental property, but we are also experts in organizing your travel and transportation plans, recommending and booking tours and activities, and offering suggestions on how to make the best and most of your time while visiting. We are the local experts. Why take a chance when we can help you make the best educated and honest choice!

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is THE principal town of the region. Its main activity is tourism and the hustle and bustle of the town is unknown further south. You can find several supermarkets, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, doctors, pharmacies, post office and banks. Renowned by surfers across the country, Salsa Brava is the famous surf break. A vibrant organic market is open every Saturday morning, from 6:00 a.m., just behind the Casa de la Cultura. Its products are excellent and inexpensive.

Cocles is the next neighborhood after Puerto Viejo. Its beach is the only one in the area that is protected by a lifeguard and is a great place for surfers. A short distance from the shore, a small rocky island covered with vegetation adds to the already superb view. A small road of about 6 km (Margarita road), leaves from Cocles and crosses the hills to reach the road that goes from Bribri to Sixaola, near the Panamanian border. The road is in poor condition and it is recommended to use it only with a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

Playa Chiquita, 7 Km southern Puerto Viejo, as its name indicates, is a succession of small, white sandy beaches which are protected by a reef. It's a very friendly/family neighborhood with restaurants, a grocery store (where you can find international products), an ice cream shop, all within walking distance. It is where our is located, just next to the school that says "Centro Educativo Playa Chiquita Punta Uva".

Punta Uva is where the wildlife refuge Gandoca-Manzanillo starts. The coast is composed of two bays, separated by Punta Uva point. You will find to the south the district of Arrecife, and to the north a large bay surrounded by jungle vegetation. This is one of the best spots of the area for snorkeling. Don't miss the river kayaking. A small road of about 6 km "Paraíso road", leaves from Punta Uva and crosses the hills to join the road leading to Bribri at the border with Panama. Again, the road is in poor condition and it is recommended to use it only with a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

In the heart of a wildlife refuge and on the edge of a long sandy beach, you will find the small village of Manzanillo. It’s the end of the road but the beginning of an unforgettable experience. There are several restaurants, a bar and a souvenir shop that face the long beach, lined with coconut trees. Children play endlessly in the waves, men fish from their boats and the elderly townsmen sit in the shade of the almond trees, playing their games of dominos. Life is easy and peaceful and mornings are filled with wonder as you awake to the sounds of nature and the howler monkeys.
